2019 Update
Although nearly two years old, all of the information in this article is still relevant. These 4 simple steps will help you connect your Alexa to your Apple TV; scroll down to find out how.
Have you ever wondered, “how does Apple TV work,” or “can Alexa control Apple TV?”
The answer is: yes, it can!
And I’m going to show you how in just a few easy steps.
While your Alexa might not be able to control Apple TV or say… your wireless home security system from Protect America on its own ;), you can easily add a control hub unit like the Logitech Harmony Hub to accomplish your goals with just a few short steps.
Products from Amazon.com
1. Your Equipment List
While Alexa is not able to directly control your Apple TV unit, you can use a home hub controller like the Harmony Hub Remote to create a task list for Alexa to execute allowing her to turn on your television, switch the input to the Apple TV, and connect to the audio system. In order to achieve this you will need:
- Alexa and/or Echo
- Your smartphone or tablet that supports your Apple TV
- Logitech Harmony Hub Remote
- A WiFi enabled home network
- Apple TV
- Flat screen television with HDMI connections
2. Set Up Your Harmony Hub
While Alexa can turn on your television set, it doesn’t have the ability to complete a complex list of tasks to open the connection to your Apple TV. The Harmony Hub creates that tasklist and feeds it to Alexa when you use the magic command, “Alexa, watch Apple TV.”
Your Harmony Hub works using an infrared signal to turn on your television and execute other commands normally controlled by your television remote. So, the Hub must be positioned in a direct line of sight to your television, gaming systems, streaming video device like the Apple TV, and any other WiFi enabled units you want to add to your home automation network. You can’t hide it in a cabinet as the wood will block the signal.
Next, you need to download the app for the Harmony Hub by visiting the Apple or Android store. The app will walk you through creating your account and connecting it to your home WiFi network. You will need the password to your home network.
3. Connect Apple TV to Your Harmony
During setup the Harmony Hub will look for other WiFi enabled devices nearby and ask you if you wish to add those devices to your system. If your Apple TV does not appear automatically, click on the search icon and select your version of Apple TV from the list. It will ask you for your Apple TV account information–you only need to enter this information once, as the Harmony and Alexa will store it for future use.
Finally, you need to create an Activity in the Harmony Hub. You will enter in the voice command you will use to turn on your Apple TV. Next, you need to create the activity list that Alexa and Harmony will walk through to access your unit. This may include turning on the television, selecting the correct input, logging into your Apple TV account, and choosing the audio system.
4. Talk to Alexa
Once your Activity is saved, you are ready to go! Simple say, “Alexa, watch Apple TV,” and you are good to go! You will still need to use your Apple TV app to select which shows to watch, but you won’t need to find any remote to get going.

Smart speakers are turning smarter day by day. With just your voice, you can control your smart-home products, search the web, play and stream music, get your queries answered, and perform similar other tasks without using your hands or even moving a finger.
It seems like smart speakers are going to replace smartphones. But what about calling and messaging — the core functionality of smartphones? Ah! That’s already part of smart speakers like Amazon Echo that allow you to call and message people for free via your Echo device. Directtv now app mac.
So what is Echo calling and messaging and how does it work? Let’s dive deep into the world of Alexa communication services to understand it better.
1. Compatible Devices
The calling and messaging feature works on all Echo devices, Alexa apps for iOS and Android, and Amazon Fire tablets. You don’t have to be on the same medium for you can mix and match mediums. For instance, you can call or message from the Alexa app to an Echo device or call from one Echo device to another and so on.
2. How Does It Work
Echo communication services take advantage of the internet for calls and messages. They do not consume your phone’s calling or messaging credits (unless you send an SMS). However, data charges will apply depending on your plan for Wi-Fi or mobile data.
3. Who Can You Call and Message
Echo calling works irrespective of your location, and you could be sitting next to the other person or miles away. However, you can make and receive calls from Alexa contacts only. That means, those contacts should be registered with Alexa (via Echo, Alexa app, or Fire tablet).
In countries like the US, Canada, and Mexico, you can make calls to some mobile and landline numbers for free. However, to receive regular phone calls, you will need the Echo Connect accessory.
Similarly, you can send messages like any other chat app to Alexa contacts only. To message non-Alexa users, you will have to send an SMS.
4. How to Know Someone Is Calling or Messaging
When someone calls you, the notification will be sent to the Alexa app and all the linked Echo devices. For Echo users, the light will turn green, and you will hear a ringtone along with the calling person’s name announced by Alexa.
On the Alexa app, the contact card appears on the screen with the options to answer or ignore the call.
In the cases of new messages, you will receive a notification on your phone, and the Echo device will chime with yellow light around it.
5. Make Calls with Alexa
To call someone via the Echo, use the following commands:
- Call [Name’s] Echo - Used to call another Echo device. For instance, call Robert's echo.
- Call [Contact name] - Used to call a mobile or landline number
- Call [Contact digits] - Used to dial numbers directly (including the area code) of the number you want to call. For instance, call 919712345678
When contacts have more than one number, Alexa asks you to pick the number you wish to call.
Even though the Alexa app shows all the contacts, you can make calls only to Alexa contacts. Tap on the contact card to determine whether they are an Alexa user or not. If they are, you will see the options Alexa audio and video calls. Tap on the required option.

When you want your Echo device to be silent, you can turn off the ringtone for incoming calls. When you do that, you will be notified about incoming calls only through the green light on your Echo devices. Nothing changes for the Alexa app unless you put your phone on silent.
Note: You need to disable incoming ringer separately for every device if you own multiple Echo speakers. To turn it off, go to your Echo speaker under Devices in the Alexa app and tap on Sound. Turn off Incoming call ringer setting.
13. Enable Do Not Disturb
The above method only turns off ringtone without disabling the lights or messages. For that, Echo speakers have the do not disturb mode.
When enabled, all call and message alerts including drop ins will be disabled on the Echo device.
Tip: You can even schedule the do not disturb mode.To enable this mode, go to your Echo device settings under Devices in the Alexa app and enable Do not disturb.
14. Manage the Calling Profile

To change your calling name, enable drop in, or disable caller ID — you can do that under your profile settings. For that, tap on the Contacts icon under Communication followed by My Profile & Settings.
15. Know About Privacy
Multiple people can use the same Echo device. While that’s okay if you are using it to ask simple questions but when it comes to calling and messaging, privacy plays a key role. Imagine your family member calling your contacts.
Fortunately, Amazon has provided the voice profile or multiple user feature to avoid that. Your Echo speaker uses your voice to determine and find the contacts linked with your account.
Note: Voice profiles do not work for incoming calls for anyone can answer the call on Echo.Quick Fix: Not Able to Make Calls
If you aren’t able to take advantage of Calling and messaging functionality, try these solutions.
1. Enable Alexa Communication Feature
You need to enable the service first in the Alexa app to use it. The same goes for the other person. If you are trying to call someone who hasn’t enabled it, you won’t be able to contact them.
2. Supported Numbers
As mentioned before, you can make calls to Alexa contacts and some numbers in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico only. If you are trying to call other numbers, the call won’t get through.
The calling also doesn’t support emergency numbers, premium-rate numbers, toll free numbers, and abbreviated dial codes.
